Titan Crew Remains With The Titanic. For All Time.
Jun 25, 2023Ocean Gate's Titan submersible had been lost for almost a week, and yesterday it was finally confirmed what many had suspected all along: instead of having been stranded at the bottom of the ocean or entangled in the wreckage of the Titanic, the fiber-carbon sub had imploded, killing everyone on board.
Ironically, this must have come as a relief to families of the five adventurous souls on board, as they did not have to suffer a suffocating death but were instead killed in an instant.
According to Dave Corley, a former US nuclear submarine officer interviewed by the BBC, a sub implodes at around 1,500mph (671 meters/s)--meaning it all happens within 1 millisecond (1/1000 of a second).
Since the human brain is only capable of registering stimuli after 25 milliseconds, the five doomed explorers could not have even seen or felt what was happening to them--they were literally dead before they knew it.
Strangely, a sub's implosion is immediately followed by an explosion, since the air inside a sub is rich in hydrocarbon vapors which auto-ignite, turning human bodies into dust.
Not a nice prospect to be sure, but arguably a lot better than having to sit in the dark, at the bottom of the ocean for days, waiting to be slowly suffocated (even if that would mean dying of hypothermia first).
Much better to go out with a bang.
Rest In Peace, Titan crew. May your fate contribute to the advancement of science, and may nobody have to suffer what you did.
